Dear Friend,

This morning, my phone lit up with news alerts about another mass
shooting. When I saw “Brooklyn” in the headlines, my heart stopped. How
many times have my husband and I walked the streets of Brooklyn and rode
the subway during trips to see our daughter, or to visit friends?

A man had opened fire [ [link removed] ] on a busy Brooklyn train platform crowded with
commuters, injuring 10, and with multiple other people hurt from smoke
inhalation and panic. The shooter is still at large. This news — along
with the fact that there have been over 119 mass shootings in 2022 so far
alone [ [link removed] ] — has shattered forever the belief of safety for our loved
ones.

[1]Tell Congress that we demand safety for our loved ones and for our
communities, no matter where they are. Demand that Congress take action on
gun violence now, starting with the small first steps of passing universal
background checks on gun sales, and banning insanely lethal assault rifles
and high-capacity magazines.

Mercifully, our friends and family in Brooklyn are all safe. For now. But
too many friends and family members are mourning losses today.

We have an emergency. Over the last few years, the already-sky-high rates
of gun violence in the United States have soared even further,[ [link removed] ] and gun
sales are at record highs.[ [link removed] ] There is an unending parade of headline news
about the latest mass shooting, and of heart-wrenching stories of students
and teachers, of mothers and fathers, of sons and daughters, of family
members, going about their business, being killed or injured by guns, and
their families and communities traumatized forever.

The gun violence, the gun violence…. It must stop.

Our elected leaders have no greater responsibility than to keep us safe,
and we cannot continue to accept their utter failure to do so.

[2]Congress must take action on gun violence now, starting with the small
first steps of passing universal background checks on gun sales, and
banning insanely lethal assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.

Please forward this email to your own loved ones and ask them to sign too.
Ask them to add their voice to yours so that we can unite together to
demand safety for all of us.

With love and solidarity,

Gloria, Kristin, Nate, Jessica, and the entire
MomsRising/MamásConPoder team
