Tax season is winding down, and I wanted to let you know that the deadline to file your federal taxes is next Monday, April 18. It's also the last chance to claim two types of federal payments:
1. A third Economic Impact Payment (“stimulus payment”) of up to $1,400 per person, for those who have not yet received it. If you have already received a 6475 letter from the IRS about this, you can click here for more information.
2. The remaining six months’ worth of the expanded Child Tax Credit that was included in the American Rescue Plan that I voted for. This credit can amount to up to $300 per month, per child. I support making this expansion of the credit permanent, and in the short term, I want to make sure that everyone who qualifies receives it.
The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. To locate the nearest VITA or TCE site near you, use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887.
My office will also be at Plaza de la Raza on Thursday, April 14th, at 11am PT to help you with IRS casework or assistance with other federal agencies.
If you have a question about either of these payments, you can contact my office at (213) 481-1425.
