John,
Out-of-state waste has NO place in Maine and, thankfully, Maine's Legislature overwhelmingly agrees!
I am pleased to report that just hours ago the Maine Legislature enacted LD 1639 — a bill that would close the loophole that allows Massachusetts and other New England states to truck their hazardous waste up to the state-owned Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town.
Rapidly filling landfills require expansions and lead to increased pollution, which disproportionately impacts the Penobscot Nation, residents living near the landfill, and the Penobscot River and Bay. This bill will help protect Maine’s environment and public health.
It was a pleasure working alongside our partners at the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Community Action Works, Don't Waste ME, and others to get this bill enacted. We are stronger together.
Thank you to the hundreds of you who sent messages and called your legislators to urge for support of LD 1639. Because of your efforts, this bill now heads to Governor Mills' desk for her signature.
Today is certainly a day to celebrate!
Thank you for all that you do,
Beth
