[1]Real Justice

Hey John, it's
good to meet you.

I am the District Attorney of Travis County in Texas. That means Austin,
in case you didn’t know.

Today I want to thank you for everything that you’ve done as part of this
Real Justice community – because it matters probably even more than you
know.

I, for one, would not be in office without you volunteering and donating
and without the years of work that Real Justice organizers put in.

I would not have been able to drastically scale back the predatory
practice of cash bail, which exploits the poor and marginalized.

I would not have been able to expand diversion and rehabilitation programs
that keep nonviolent people out of jail.

I would not have been able to ensure our community gets to decide whether
law enforcement breaks the law when they harm our neighbors.

I would not be on the verge of rolling out an exciting, new restorative
justice program to keep kids from ever touching our criminal legal system
and to instead get them the support they need.

I am so grateful.

Because I know this work is hard.

Because I know that our national movement is facing tremendous resistance
from police unions, judges, and those who want to maintain the status quo.

Because I know that the system is stacked against people seeking justice
against law enforcement.

In the face of all of this, I am amazed at how this community keeps
standing up to fight. We need to keep it up.

Because at the end of the day, making change is about will. The will to do
whatever it takes.

That is the only way we will be able to achieve real justice, changing the
system from the inside out, district by district, all over the country.

By staying committed. And doing the work together.

[ [link removed] ]Real Justice has 11 races coming up fast in May and June. Will you chip
in now to make sure our movement is strong enough for the fights ahead? It
will take all of us, but together we can elect more change-makers like me.

Let's keep it up,

José Garza
District Attorney for Travis County, Texas
