This morning, we woke to news of a mass shooting in Brooklyn. At least 10 people were shot on the subway during the morning rush hour after a gunman opened a canister that filled the car with smoke and opened fire.

Waking up to news of another mass shooting should not be this familiar. This is not normal. No one should have to face the threat of gun violence on their morning commute. Or at a movie theater, concert venue, house of worship, or school. We have the right to live free from the terror of gun violence.

Indiscriminate bloodshed like this serves as a shocking reminder of the toll of gun violence. And we know that every day, gun violence steals the lives of so many without national outrage.

There is still much that we don’t know about this shooting. As of this writing, law enforcement are still searching for the gunman. Schools in the area are locked down. The city is traumatized and on high alert. And the whole country is witnessing, once again, the cost of inaction.

Our hearts are in Brooklyn and with all those directly touched by this senseless attack. We remain steadfast in our commitment to honor them and all victims and survivors of gun violence with action.
