Working America

Friend,

Last month, economists reported that the 400 richest families in America now pay a lower tax rate than the bottom 50% of income earners for the first time in a century.

Yes, you read that right. Billionaires paid a lower rate than public school teachers, nurses and retail workers.

This revelation is part of a growing list of examples of just how rigged our economy is in favor of the powerful and wealthy. The rapidly increasing income inequality we’re facing won’t solve itself — we need to restore fairness to our tax code and ensure that the rich are paying their fair share.

Sign here to tell lawmakers that we need an economy that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.

Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) have introduced a Millionaires Surtax proposal that would begin to do just that. The Millionaires Surtax that would increase taxes on the richest 0.2%. The other 99.8% of us won’t pay a cent more. This modest tax increase on the salaries and investment incomes of the wealthiest among us would be game changing for working families.

The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates the surtax would raise $635 billion over 10 years. That’s $635 billion for social services, public works, infrastructure improvement, health care, schools and other critically under-funded programs.

This tax proposal is a crucial step towards balancing our economic playing field and ensuring that those who have prospered pay it forward to the country that made their wealth possible.

Sign here to tell your lawmakers that it’s time for the ultra wealthy to pay their fair share.

In solidarity,

Sydney Roberts
