I’m Senator T’wina Nobles and I am honored to serve Washington’s 28th Legislative District in Pierce County. In 2020, I became the first Black legislator elected to the State Senate in over a decade.
This week is Black Maternal Health Week , which brings awareness to the unique inequities that Black women face in our maternal health care system. This is important: we’re facing a maternal health crisis that disproportionately impacts Black women.
As a mother of three, I’m proud to have developed the Tacoma Urban League’s Midwifery and Doula program to combat medical disadvantages we face entering motherhood.
So this Black Maternal Health Week, will you join me and demand action to close racial disparities in maternal health care?

As you know, structural racism compromises our health.
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world – and we’re one of the few nations where this metric is rising .
Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than White women – and much more likely to experience preventable maternal deaths.
Black lives matter and Black mothers matter – we need action to close health disparities for us.
So please, join me in partnership to address this public health crisis. We need bold action to save the lives of Black mothers in Washington and across America.
