As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. --Gary

With Thanksgiving just over the horizon, our family has much for which to be thankful. On a personal note, this past Saturday was the wedding day of our youngest and only son, Zach, and his bride, Meghan. It was a crisp and sunny day in the nation's capital which set the stage for a joyful celebration.

Family and friends had gathered from near and far to celebrate the young couple. Though they both grew up in the suburbs of Washington, they did not know one another until they worked on the Trump-Pence campaign in 2016. Their campaign responsibilities gave them the opportunity to interact frequently. Post campaign, they both ended up with key positions on the staff of Vice President Mike Pence. And Gary and I can say with knowing smiles . . . the rest is history!

We feel very blessed that the Lord brought these two young people into each other's lives and that He will be at the center of their marriage. They both feel very fortunate to be serving their country during a critical time in the nation's history. Our newly enlarged family will be together at Thanksgiving, so for us this will be an extra special day of thankfulness.

Gary and I would so appreciate your prayers, not only for Zach and Meghan, but for all the young people who are making their way through these uncertain times. Whether the young people in your lives are college age, making their mark in a career or on the cusp of marriage, there are many challenges facing the next generation.

The economy is booming and opportunities abound. But at the same time, cultural norms that we took for granted when we grew up are under attack today. All the truths and values of Judeo-Christian civilization are being eroded.

Pray that those who are coming of age today will find their footing in a growing and vibrant faith. And pray that their faith will both guide and sustain them in the uncharted social waters in which we find ourselves.

Ask God to give them strong voices and a sense of community with others of similar beliefs and values. And ask the Lord to give them winsome ways to communicate with those in their circle of friends and coworkers about the challenges facing our country and faith community.

As you know, Israel is going through its own political and cultural challenges. In addition, anti-Semitism is growing in Europe and, sadly, in the United States too.

Please pray for the safety and security of the Israeli people. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem as the Scriptures instruct us. And stand up in your community against anti-Semitism in all its forms.

As the nation pauses next week to celebrate America's unique Thanksgiving holiday, we would do well to thank our Heavenly Father for so many things. We are blessed by a country rich in natural resources, steeped in history, framed by religious freedom and blessed by Almighty God. For these we are rightly thankful.

But recent years have seen an erosion of the recognition of the critical role these have played in making our country the land of opportunity it is today. As you gather with those you love at a Thanksgiving get together, take the opportunity to reflect on the very rights and gifts that laid the foundation for America's greatness but that today seem to be under assault.

With our freedoms come responsibilities, and it is those responsibilities which are being downplayed in today's culture. It is the responsibility of each generation to pass on to the next an appreciation of how we became this great nation and what it will take to keep the freedoms we love.

Thank our Heavenly Father for the privilege of living in a country where individual freedoms are respected and hard work and ingenuity can change the trajectory of one's life. Ask Him to give you a sense of awe and appreciation for the opportunities you and your family have been given.

Most particularly, thank Him for the freedom to practice your faith not only in your house of worship but in your daily life. Ask Him to shine a light on cultural changes that seem to be eroding this foundational freedom. Finally, pray that discussions with family and friends around the Thanksgiving feast would be respectful and steeped in a desire for real communication and understanding undergirded by His love.

Thanksgiving blessings from our family to yours!
