Dear John,
I’m thrilled to announce that Virginia just passed critical risk-limiting audit legislation – a major victory for secure elections for Virginia’s 5.9 million registered voters and a big reason to celebrate Verified Voting’s work moving states toward best-practice audits!
Â
This legislation is the result of dedicated resources and years of hard work alongside bipartisan stakeholders including election officials, legislators, and election security advocates. The bills – SB370 and HB895 – further improve Virginia’s framework for post-election audits by requiring that audits be conducted before the results are certified, in alignment with audit best practices. The bills also slightly extend the deadlines for the certification of election results to give election officials time to complete these audits.Â
Â
Our team has long advocated for risk-limiting audits, a best-practice post-election audit that manually checks a random sample of voters’ paper ballots to provide statistical evidence that the reported election outcome is correct. We participated in Virginia’s first risk-limiting audit pilot in the City of Fairfax back in 2018 and have been active in advocating for election security best practices in the Commonwealth for many years.

We’re proud of the work our team has done – and Virginia’s continued leadership on election security. But despite all the progress we’ve made in making best-practice audits a routine part of elections, just two other states mandate risk-limiting audits. We need your help so we can replicate Virginia’s success story across the map. Â
Â
We’re continually working to ensure every voter can trust that their vote counts as cast. Our progress for Virginia’s voters is a reason to celebrate, but we still have more work to do – please consider a donation to support our work today.

With thanks,
