Dear Friend,

Edwin Romero Mendez was able to celebrate becoming a U.S. citizen this past year. It was a long journey for him to finally achieve his dreams – and it could not have happened without YOU. Thanks to your support, immigrants like Edwin have received legal representation, setting them on the path to build a new life in the U.S.

This month, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) is raising funds to support the expansion of our Legal Services Program. By May 2022, USCRI is set to open new offices in Denver, CO; Richmond, VA; Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI; and Austin and Dallas, TX. This will double the number of USCRI’s legal offices! And all these offices will be able to provide pro-bono and “low bono” legal assistance to new immigrants like Edwin.

This is why we need your help today ([link removed]) .

Last year, USCRI’s legal department served over 2,200 refugees and immigrants with citizenship and green card applications, family-based petitions, representation in removal proceedings, and more. These numbers are set to rise due to our upcoming expansion efforts and the expected regional increase in refugees and asylum seekers entering the U.S. in need of legal assistance.

But legal representation is expensive, which is why we operate on a pro-bono and “low bono” basis – so the people who need it, can get quality legal representation despite their income status.

USCRI has a proven track record of serving low-income refugees and immigrants with legal aid. While immigration matters take approximately 2-4 years to be completed, in FY21 alone USCRI’s legal department successfully obtained legal status for many clients, including 45 Special Immigrant Juvenile Status children who received their green cards before the Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, 38 newly minted U.S. citizens, and 6 asylees who obtained their green cards. These are just a few of the people we helped – thanks to your support.

The legal needs of refugees and immigrants go beyond just securing lawful status. Our lawyers also work on disputing discrimination claims in housing and/or employment and ensuring refugees and immigrants have access to much-needed public benefits – rights provided to them by law but too often denied.

For many immigrants and refugees, the filing fees and other court-related costs are far too expensive. Your donation of $300 can help provide an attorney for an unaccompanied minor or a donation of $1,000 can help cover the costs of an asylum application.

So please consider donating ([link removed]) today and providing legal assistance to those in need. Whether you can make a one-time gift or sustain our work monthly, thank you for helping so many!

Thank you,

Kevin Sturtevant, CFRE
Vice President, Strategic Development
