Melissa Lucio is scheduled to be executed in Texas in less than 16 days for a crime that never occurred. Numerous experts on false confessions are speaking out in support of clemency for Melissa.

Last week, Dr. Gisli H. Gudjonsson, one of the world’s leading experts on compliance, suggestibility, and false confessions voiced his grave concerns about the case in an op-ed for the Independent. “Melissa Lucio’s case is one of the most tragic I have come across in my 40-year career as a clinical forensic psychologist,” he said.

Dr. Gudjonsson’s review of Melissa’s interrogation and report on the purported confession was included in the clemency petition filed by her attorneys to Gov. Greg Abbott.

“Officers played on Melissa’s vulnerabilities by relentlessly accusing her of having abused and beaten her daughter to death and being a bad mother,” he wrote. He went on to say, “There was no tangible confession to murder,” and that her “inadvertent admissions” were nevertheless exaggerated by the prosecution.
