We invite you to come to Coalitions Rising, where you can learn about new research and practices in prevention. This one-day conference in Columbus, Ohio, will be held December 4, 2019, at the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel. It’ll bring together community coalitions, behavioral healthcare providers, youth-led prevention groups, and others to equip them with best practices for prevention.

We hope you can join us at Coalitions Rising this year. We are excited to have Alfredo Cerrato, who will be speaking about cultural competency and bring attendees on a journey to reflect on how personal and professional cultural dynamics benefit prevention work and inspire attendees to engage in meaningful relationships. Brandi Lust will be helping attendees take some time to pause and reflect to create more space for ourselves and become more resilient. The breakout sessions will be wide-ranging and informative covering topics including prevention in the faith community, communications campaigns with no budget, environmental strategies to prevent underage alcohol consumption, creating sustainability for coalitions and more! You can register and read all the session descriptions on Eventbrite by going to preventionactionalliance.org/coalitions-rising.

Continuing education hours are being offered for attendees who are social workers through the Ohio Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, CHES credits through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc, and prevention from the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board.

Coalitions Rising created to help people in the field of prevention to stay on top of the constant changes in this field in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. This conference will have something for everyone. We hope you can join!
The Prevention Action & Advocacy Summit: Registration Closes Today!
The first ever Prevention Action & Advocacy Summit is less than two weeks away, and registration ends tomorrow, Friday, November 22.

Our keynote speakers are prepared to share the latest research around the health effects of vaping as well as details on Ohio’s new Tobacco 21 law. Still on the fence about attending? Consider registering if you’re looking to enhance your knowledge and skills on the following:

  • How to advocate for change with key decision-makers around the epidemic of youth vaping, including: school administration officials, city council members, and legislators.
  • Lesson plans, videos, and other resources to educate students around nicotine addiction and the health effects of e-cigarette use.
  • Model policies and enforcement mechanisms for community spaces, schools, and tobacco retailers.
  • Technical assistance on advocacy, prevention best practices, and strategies to meet your needs.

Together, we’ll paint a picture of how the landscape of tobacco prevention has changed in Ohio so we can work together to counteract the myths perpetuated by the vaping industry, empower our young people to make healthy decisions, and prevent youth and young adults from getting hold of this addictive product.

This one-day summit in Columbus, Ohio, will help coalition members, adult allies, public officials, and law enforcement officers address youth and adult vaping. It’ll be held at the Renaissance Columbus Westerville-Polaris Hotel on December 5, 2019. We will apply for Continuing Education from the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board.
Don't Miss the Ohio Adult Allies Summit
Adult allies are crucial to the success of youth-led prevention. They educate young people in evidence-based strategies for prevention, empower them to create change in their communities, and advocate on behalf of them with school and community leaders. The Ohio Adult Allies Summit informs the work of adult allies who in turn empower youth leaders in prevention.

We have an exciting group of presenters this year and I really don’t want you to miss out. Joining us to present TIC: The Impact of Trauma will be Bobbie Beale, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist and the CEO of Life Adventures for All, a non-profit organization committed to making Adventure Therapy accessible to our most vulnerable youth and families. John Ackerman, PhD will focus on Strategies for Adult Allies to Empower Suicide Prevention Advocates while Reducing Suicide Risk. Dr. Ackerman serves as the Suicide Prevention Coordinator for the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research (CSPR) at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH). He directs community, school, and hospital efforts to educate others about the risks and warning signs of youth suicide. And Finally, the Evidence-Based Strategies in Building Resiliency in Youth and Communities workshop will be led by Dr. Keith King, a professor of health promotion and education at the University of Cincinnati. He also serves as the Director of the Center for Prevention Science. His research emphasizes psychosocial factors associated with child/adolescent health and resiliency, suicide, violence and substance abuse prevention, mental health promotion, and positive youth development.
