John – For years, far right groups have pushed to make abortions illegal and unattainable, despite what has been described as the “settled law” of the right to an abortion under Supreme Court precedent.
Their methods have been effective, if slow. It’s taken decades for these extreme right-wing groups to weave in state laws restricting the number of abortion facilities or denying funding to cover the cost of the procedure.
But now, under Mitch McConnell’s packed conservative court, SCOTUS is primed and ready to dismantle reproductive rights – and Republican-controlled state legislatures are passing the laws that will allow them to do it.
It started in my home state of Texas, which implemented the most restrictive (and savage) anti-abortion bill since the passage of Roe v. Wade 49 years ago. SCOTUS upheld that law on a technicality.
Brand New Congress is fighting back by working to elect fierce champions for universal healthcare and reproductive freedom. Can you chip in $25 now to help us get out the vote for our candidates?
A total of 16 states passed laws in 2021 restricting access to abortion, and more have been introduced this year in Missouri, Idaho, and others.
One woman in Texas was recently charged with homicide after her home abortion forced her to go to the emergency room. The charges were later dropped, but this case shows us how far local officials are willing to go to suppress our right to abortion care.
Here’s the simple truth: without access to safe, legal abortions, people are going to die. Either because they are forced to carry non-viable pregnancies to term, or because they will resort to unsafe methods without the care of a qualified medical professional.
John, the solution to this problem lies with Congress. Only Congress has the power to end this assault on our reproductive freedoms by enshrining the right to an abortion, and our right to bodily autonomy, into federal law.
Congress had that chance recently – but Senator Joe Manchin joined Mitch McConnell and the rest of Senate Republicans to block it.
It’s never been more clear that we must strip Joe Manchin of his power by wrenching control of the Senate swing vote from his hands.
Brand New Congress has three Senate candidates running for seats currently held by the GOP. If we elect Morgan Harper (OH), Charles Booker (KY), and Malcolm Kenyatta (PA), then progressives will own the Senate swing vote. Can you pitch in $25, $50, or even $100 now to elect a progressive Senate majority?
