Your weekly Indivisible Newsletter Indivisibles,
We did it!
Last Thursday, the Senate confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court by a bipartisan, 53-47 vote.
We knew there was a clear path, we knew she had been confirmed on a bipartisan basis three times previously, and yet we waited with bated breath after watching Republicans on the Committee on the Judiciary disrespect, demean, and disparage Judge Jackson with transparently racist attempts to smear her record and character.
But, just like she told Sen. Padilla during her confirmation hearings, she persevered.
We now have a historic Justice-to-be and that has happened because of your dedication to turn up the pressure on your senators. Those bad-faith Republican attacks against Judge Jackson’s character could have worked if people decided to sit out of the nomination process. That did not come to pass because folks like you got activated and stayed loud to ensure a swift and fair confirmation.
This is the Indivisible theory of change in action and it starts and ends with you.
When you get activated, you effect change. When you effect change, you shape a better world.
So let’s keep it going, here are your weekly to-dos:
Your 3 weekly to-dos
- Click here to email President Biden and tell him to lower prescription drug prices. This is a new addition to our Let’s Go Joe Executive Actions Campaign focusing on healthcare: One in four Americans struggles to afford medication they need to stay healthy, while Big Phrama drives up drug prices to line their pockets. It is time President Biden use his legal authority to dramatically lower the cost of essential drugs like insulin, EpiPens, asthma inhalers, and more.
- Click here to make a video urging Biden to declare a climate emergency. The President has narrowly invoked the Defense Production Act -- one of the most important powers that can be invoked under a national emergency -- to increase production of mining in order to aid in the manufacturing of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. It is good that the administration has invoked the DPA, but this narrow focus is not enough to address the climate crisis. We need to keep the heat on and urge the White House to boldly use the power of the executive to fully use the DPA to transition us to clean renewable energy and declare a national climate emergency. For a brilliant example clip, watch this video by the wonderful Giovanna.

Let's Go Joe
Last Wednesday, we secured another victory in the Let’s Go Joe campaign! President Biden announced another extension to the pause for federal student loan payments until August 31. This is a great first step that we should celebrate! But we still want the administration to go further by canceling at least $50,000 in debt for all borrowers. So, click here to tell Biden to cancel student debt and stay tuned for opportunities to take action on that in the future.

Vicki Miller, Group Leader of Indivisible Philadelphia, was featured in an article about the 35 Doors Project -- an initiative to get volunteers to knock on 35 doors to get out the vote in Pennsylvania. “We ask people how they’re feeling after the last several years, listen to what’s on their mind and ask if they’re aware of the election coming up…Research shows that voting begets more voting. So if we can convince someone to vote in the primary election, they are more likely to vote in the general election.” |
The last two weeks have been incredible displays of how ongoing action can create change as we watched the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the extension of the federal student loan pause, and the announcement of a phase out of Title 42. We have many more challenges on the horizon.
Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to stay up to date on our priorities moving forward and let these wins give us the energy to keep marching on.
