| Dear John: Last week was a really difficult one for so many people, with more bad legislation moving forward in a number of states. Below we're sharing ways to support and advocate for our families, but ICYMI, there are a number of ways you can take action, today, in support of PFLAG families everywhere. Visit pflag.org/HowToHelp for resources. | | | | | Support Tell Teachers: PFLAG Has Your Back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the "Don’t Say Gay/Don't Say Trans" law, and its impact on families and teachers is already being felt across the state -- including by kindergarten teacher Cory Bernaert. Cory eloquently spoke out about how this harmful legislation is affecting his classroom. In response, anti-LGBTQ+ forces have attacked him, threatening his job and the jobs of so many other LGBTQ+ educators. We can’t let that happen. Teachers deserve to be able to focus on their jobs supporting and educating students, instead of having to worry about these attacks, and no teacher should have to lie about who they are. When kids come back to the classroom after summer break and Christmas vacation, they should all be able to talk about their families and how they spent their time; so should teachers. On family tree day, all families should be able to be included and talk about their family structures. Teachers everywhere are feeling the pressure of these harmful laws, and it's time to speak out. Families and teachers are in this fight together, supporting one another. PFLAG National is proud to partner with the American Federation of Teachers to send notes of support to Florida teachers. Take action today and send your message of support. | | | | | Education Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate for Voter Registration As local primaries get into motion and we move closer to the November elections, it’s important that we get started helping people register to vote. Here are a few steps to take to become a better advocate for voter registration: - Learn: Once you have verified that you are registered to vote, take some time to learn more about the specifics regarding voter registration in your state. You can find the election office for your state at usa.gov/election-office or by doing a Google search for [state, board of elections].
- Watch: Watch (and share) a video from USAgov that reminds voters to confirm that they’re registered and includes instructions to change registration information if needed. You should also check out the 2020 PFLAG Academy On-Demand session Advocacy in an Election Year for PFLAG Leaders.
- Share: Use emails, texts, and social media to share details about the requirements to register, the types of ID you need to register, and the voter registration deadline in your state with your friends and family.

Which makes it the perfect time for allies, who also identify as people of faith, to affirm LGBTQ+ Christians and their families. This process is easy for some, but for many, it remains challenging when faith leaders don't demonstrate the inclusion and support that so many LGBTQ+ people need and deserve. Join us this Thursday, April 14th at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something To Talk About Live, where we will be discussing Father James Martin, S.J.’s article in America Magazine: The Jesuit Review of Faith & Culture, “Can You Really Hate the Sin and Love the Sinner?” with Fr. Jim, who authored the article. You can watch live on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, or Twitter.
