Today is National Pet Day, and as one of the biggest animal lovers in the Dean family, I knew Mad would let me take care of todayâs email.
What would we do without our pets? In our family, thatâs an impossible question to answer. As far back as I can remember, we always had cats, dogs, turtles, lizards, you name it â if you can keep it as a pet, the Deans probably had at least one at some point.
Iâve never lost my love for pets, and I canât pass up this opportunity to share a few pictures of some cherished four-legged friends:

From left to right: Louie, our cat â a stray we took in and rehabilitated after he crawled out from under Madeleineâs deck nearly 10 years ago; Sophie â the best dog in the world, who sadly passed away 2 years ago at 15 years old; Snapping a selfie with Lena, our current dog, down the shore; Hank and Sibley â my brotherâs dogs; One more shot of Lena, for good measure
While we had many pets in our childhood home â probably close to 100 cats over the years, for example â we were early proponents of the âadopt, donât shopâ mentality. In fact, our most beloved pet, a dog we named Abbie after Abington Township, wandered up to the house one day and ended up staying for the rest of her life.
And on this National Pet Day, beyond sharing stories and photos, I also want to lift up local shelters here in Pennsylvania that are helping four-legged friends find their forever homes â PAWS and the Montgomery County SPCA .
Approximately 14,200 animals around the Philadelphia area were considered stray or unhoused in 2021 alone. Even though we saw a huge wave of new pet parents at the start of the pandemic, there are still thousands of pets looking for homes and in need of rescue right now .
And both PAWS and the Montco SPCA are doing the work to spay, neuter, and connect pets with loving homes. Join me and the rest of Team Dean in celebrating this National Pet Day, and learn how you can support local pets in need of adoption:
