Dear Friend,
Today marks the start of Black Maternal Health Week – an annual week of awareness and activism dedicated to deepening the conversation about Black maternal health in our country and amplifying community-driven policies, research and care solutions. Founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, this campaign centers the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements.
Here in Florida, and across the country, Black women face higher mortality rates during childbirth than their White and Hispanic counterparts.
That’s why during my tenure in the state senate, I sponsored and passed a bill to examine racial disparities in infant mortality. And since then, I’ve continued to advocate for action on this issue.
This year, Republicans in the state legislature passed a 15-week abortion ban that’s currently headed to the governor’s desk. As we reflect on and work towards solutions to Black maternal health issues this week, it’s important we consider the disproportionate affect this ban will have on the Black community. Black women already face inequitable access to healthcare in our state, and this ban will only exacerbate that problem.
I’m proud to stand with Ruth’s List in the fight to protect reproductive freedom in Florida and to ensure nobody is denied access to reproductive health services before, during, and after a pregnancy.
If you’d like to learn more and take action for Black Maternal Health Week, visit the Black Mamas Matter Alliance.
Together, we can work towards solutions to this urgent health crisis.
Thank you,
Senator Arthenia Joyner
