John–
Our efforts have paid off. President Biden's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has finalized a new rule to rein in ghost guns. This is a huge win for public safety and a huge loss for any criminals and extremists who wanted to buy untraceable guns with no background check and no questions asked.
This victory wouldn't have been possible without people like you across the country. Last year, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers drove nearly 100,000 comments to the ATF in support of reining in ghost guns.
But the good news doesn't end there: President Biden also announced today that he is nominating former U.S. Attorney Steve Dettelbach to become the next director of the ATF! A new director confirmed by the Senate can help the ATF focus on fully enforcing laws and regulations like the one finalized today to keep our communities safe.
Because of you, we're celebrating a huge victory in the fight for gun safety. Now help our movement take the next step: Tell your U.S. senators to confirm Steve Dettelbach as the next director of the ATF.
This new rule on ghost guns could not be more necessary. It builds off of years of work by members of our movement who have led the charge by demanding action in Congress, the courts, their home states, and the White House to stop this crisis. By taking action, the ATF will cut off the stream of these untraceable guns, helping to prevent gun violence and save lives.
If confirmed, Dettelbach would also be the first Senate-confirmed ATF director since 2015. For the last seven years, the federal government's main agency for holding rogue and reckless members of the gun industry accountable has lacked the leadership and clear direction needed to keep illegal guns out of our communities. Tell your U.S. senators to confirm Steve Dettelbach as the next ATF director now.
The fight to stop ghost guns is not over, but this new rule is a victory worth taking the time to celebrate. It took years of work to get us here, work that has now paid off in a huge way.
Thank you for being in this fight, and thank you for demanding action.
