Hey John,
“I would rather have a thousand school board members than one president and no school board members,” said Ralph Reed of the Christian Coalition in 1996.
While I don't agree with him on virtually
anything else, I'm with him on this one. School boards are massively influential and deeply shape our political, social, and economic institutions. They are also closer to people's lives in a way that Congress and the White House rarely are.
That's exactly why Run for Something is hard at work electing diverse young progressives to school boards across the country. And our work is getting noticed!
In case you missed it, check out Run for Something school board candidates (and myself) featured in this TIME article.
"What really took me over the edge was when I started hearing this rhetoric around critical race theory and how just teaching the accurate depiction of U.S. history is now used as an emotional tactic to try to get people in an uproar."
- Staci Childs, RFS candidate for Texas State Board of Education
Republicans and conservative crusaders have known for decades that what happens in our schools impacts the country for generations. It's been a GOP-long-haul strategy going back decades – remember the fights about teaching evolution vs. creationism in schools? – and it’s helped them build power.
Now, they're banning books that speak the truth about white supremacy and the Holocaust. They're attacking trans youth simply for being who they are. They're forcing children and teachers to risk their lives and health by violently opposing mask mandates.
And they're taking these fights to school board elections across the country.
But fierce Run for Something school board candidates like Lisa Schoenberger and Staci Childs aren't having any of it. They're fighting back.
The people who control school boards determine the kind of curriculum kids learn, which then determines the kind of citizens they grow up to become. If we want our young ones to learn how to be engaged, compassionate, and empathetic members of society, it starts in the schools.
That's why we're tripling down on electing fierce diverse young progressives to school boards across the country. Pitch in
$5
or more and together we can protect our schools and our kids from right-wing attacks on an honest, factual education.
“We owe them [our kids] a real education that’s comprehensive, and that sometimes deals with topics that are difficult to discuss… We can’t send them out into the world never having had a hard conversation.”
- Lisa Schoenberger, RFS candidate for Millard, NE Public Schools Board of Education
We can't, and we're not going to. It's not just the right thing to do for our kids – democracy depends on it.
Pitch in
$5
or whatever you can to elect more fighters like Staci Childs and Lisa Schoenberger to school boards across the country so schools can do what they're designed to do – teach kids the truth.
Let's go,
