Dear OCCRP Reader,
➡️ Fines levied and monies seized: $7.3+ billion
➡️ Official investigations: 367
➡️ Arrests, indictments, and sentences: 556 people
Since 2011, we’ve consistently seen real world impact from our investigative reporting — citizens, advocates, and public officials who read our investigations and act on them.
This year in particular has seen a flurry of results. For example:
Organized Crime
* Group America: After we exposed this pervasive U.S.-Serbian criminal syndicate, the FBI arrested its leader Mileta Miljanić in his home in Queens, New York.
* Riviera Maya Gang: Mexican authorities arrested the leader of one of the world’s largest ATM-skimming gangs after OCCRP and partners exposed their operations in an award-winning series. Six members of the group were also sentenced to prison in Romania.
Corruption
* Azerbaijani Laundromat: Published in 2017, this groundbreaking series into a $2.9 billion money laundering scheme continues to have an impact year after year. A former member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was sentenced to four years in prison for accepting bribes in exchange for muting criticism of Azerbaijan’s human rights record. And the cousins of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev forfeited four million pounds after we revealed their ties to the Laundromat scheme.
* Lebanon’s Offshore Governor: Prosecutors in France and Switzerland launched probes into the finances of Lebanon’s Central Bank Governor Riad Salame, citing our investigations into his vast offshore wealth.
* Europe’s Waste Dump: North Macedonia announced that seven companies would be fined for their role in selling dirty, chemical-laden oil as heating oil throughout the country — a harmful polluting practice uncovered by OCCRP and our member center, Investigative Reporting Lab.
One way OCCRP accelerates the impact of our reporting is by leading the innovative Global Anti-Corruption Consortium (GACC) ([link removed]) . The GACC brings together investigative reporting by our global network of journalists and advocacy efforts driven by Transparency International (TI), the world’s largest anti-corruption organization with 100+ chapters around the world. The GACC turns headlines into action by arming civil society with the information needed to get results.
To help support this kind of impact and our fight against organized crime and corruption, please become an OCCRP Accomplice ([link removed]) today. Your membership contributes to justice and a fairer world. Can we count on you?
Yes, I'll donate today! ([link removed])
Sincerely,
Camille Eiss
Chief of Global Partnerships and Policy
