------------------------------------------------------------
This month’s Health Justice newsletter invites you to consider how health can be systemically promoted and undermined by systems—from factories to hospitals, prisons to farms—and how to promote healthy outcomes for all. Our first feature examines how heavy metals pollution in the US disproportionally affects communities of color, resulting in catastrophic health outcomes. Next, on-the-ground researchers demonstrate how safety net hospitals support wealth creation and foster health in BIPOC communities. Turning to the dysfunctional parole and incarceration systems in the US, we look at the painful reality of how incarcerated seniors suffer tragic health outcomes—and current efforts to change these cruel systems. Finally, an inspiring view of “food culture” work shows us why thinking solely in terms of “systems” can fail our health and our planet.
