Friend, California is no longer leading on climate change.

We are far behind our climate goals to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Despite Democratic supermajorities in the California State Assembly and Senate, we’ve gone THREE YEARS without passing any major climate legislation.

The reason is simple: climate delayers.

Climate delayers are members of the Legislature who talk about climate change but don’t back up those words with action — and friend, they are worse than climate deniers.

You know what you’re getting with climate deniers. But with climate delayers, voters in their districts hear the right words and think their representatives are working on behalf of their interests, when in reality, they work behind the scenes to kill climate and clean energy legislation because they think you won’t notice!

California Environmental Voters takes this very seriously. That’s why, when we published our annual Environmental Scorecard to track key climate votes and grade lawmakers based on their voting records, we gave California a D grade for the first time.

These Democratic lawmakers understand the realities of climate change, but when key climate bills stand to hurt their corporate backers, they choose to delay. Their inaction is particularly hurting low-income communities of color, who are disproportionately affected by climate change and environmental degradation.

The truth is that we know EXACTLY how to solve the climate crisis. The only thing standing in our way is a lack of political will and oil money.

We refuse to accept any more excuses – if legislators will not prioritize climate action and climate justice, it’s time to hold them accountable.
