Friends -
It was my honor and privilege last week to vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson — the first Black woman and first public defender elevated to the nation’s highest court.
Justice Jackson has proven herself a brilliant and eminently qualified jurist, and is an inspiration to our entire country.
She truly represents equal justice under the law, and brings a unique voice and much-needed perspective to the U.S. Supreme Court — my sincerest, heartfelt congratulations to her.
Confirming Justice Jackson is a tremendous step forward in the history of our country, and was the first and most urgent task ahead of us in our mission to expand the Supreme Court as a whole.
Now is the time to continue our fight to abolish the filibuster, expand the Court, and open the doorway to confirming even more nominees as qualified and principled as Justice Jackson.
Today, I’m asking you to add your voice to mine and call on my Senate colleagues to do exactly that:
This is an issue that cannot wait.
We’ve already seen time and time again the lengths Republicans in deep-red state legislatures across the country are willing to go to to dismantle the constitutional rights of the American people — especially those of marginalized groups including people of color, low-income families, immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community.
Everything from voting rights and climate action to the right to an abortion and health care are under attack, and we cannot stand idly by. We must abolish the Jim Crow-relic that is the filibuster and add four new seats to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Expanding the Court to restore balance following Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell’s blatant thefts in 2016 and 2020 is supported by the vast majority of Democrats and a plurality of voters across this country.
It’s the right thing to do, it is popular, and it is necessary.
Senate Democrats have the power to accomplish this right now. But as we’ve seen over the past year, although a solution may be simple, it is not always easy. That’s why I’m calling on our progressive movement to stand united on this issue — so if you agree, please:
As always, thank you for being a part of our movement, and for adding your support today.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
