As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert.  I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers.  Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. -- Gary

Not one of us, no one reading this message, is exempt from Father Time.  We all have the number of days granted to us by our Heavenly Father, and we do not know how life and our health will treat us as we walk through those numbered days on earth.  Such is the case for each of us, just as it is for the president of the United States.

Like me, you may disagree with many of the policy decisions of Joe Biden.  Much of what he is pushing on immigration, energy, teaching in our schools, budget priorities, etc., is the opposite of what I would support.

That said, the spectacle at the White House this week when former President Obama appeared at an event on health care was sad, tragic, very troubling, embarrassing, and, at a minimum, a shocking disregard for optics and the worldwide audience, which is constantly assessing America's leadership.

It is clear the event was cooked up in the hope that some of the Obama "magic" would rub off on the current president, who is way down in the polls and has had a very bad few weeks as he stumbled through his recent trip to Europe one gaffe at a time.  The White House clean-up crew was in overdrive for several days. Those major missteps on foreign soil could have had devastating consequences. I guess we should have breathed a slight sigh of relief when the president landed back in the United States.

One can imagine that the health care event with Obama, after the disastrous foreign trip, was designed to right the ship, so to speak.  After all, what could be better than to have a joint event at the White House, where the current president with the sagging poll numbers basks in the reflected popularity among Democrats that emanates from Barack Obama?

Instead, the event only highlighted the sharp contrasts between the two men, and it left the viewer knowing for certain that our current president is not up to the job.  As Obama soaked in the adulation, punctuated by loud applause and raucous laughter, Biden looked like a tentative and befuddled man lost at someone else's party.

As Obama reveled in light conversations and big smiles, no doubt bringing back memories of his good old days in office, President Biden wandered away looking for someone, anyone with whom to converse.  In a heartbreaking few moments, he tried to join the Obama-centered conversation by placing his hand on the former president's arm or shoulder.  Obama ignored the obvious gesture as he continued to be the center of attention, minus the sitting president.  Biden looked like the most powerful fifth wheel in the world.  Just imagine how this looked to leaders across the globe, friend and foe alike.

Even for one who is no fan of the president's agenda, it was heartbreaking and heart wrenching to watch on a purely human level.  How could this happen at such a well-scripted event?  What does it tell us?

With the president clearly not up to a rigorous campaign in 2020 (remember he stayed in his basement for much of the campaign) how could the Democrat Party put power over country when they could see this likely nominee was failing before their eyes? What are they willing to put the country through to continue in power?  And, party politics and priorities aside, how does the country get through the next nearly three years with a mentally compromised president and a vice president who is not up to her present job?

Please pray with great diligence for our country and the rocky road that lies ahead.  Pray that transparency would prevail so the American people can have a better sense that our leaders have the nation's best interests at heart rather than pure political power.

Ask God to guide those who may have unanticipated roles to play in the months and years ahead.  In the midst of all the country may face ask God for leaders from both sides of the political aisle to be honest and forthright with the American people in an effort to restore trust in the country's leadership and upcoming elections.

Ask our Heavenly Father to make His very real presence known to so many who are struggling with health issues, inflation, family dynamics, faith insecurity and a sense that they feel like strangers in their own country.  Give hope to the helpless.  Thank God for being the God of All Comfort in troubling and uncertain times.

As the Lenten season draws to a close and Christians around the world begin to celebrate Holy Week and Easter Sunday, keep uppermost in your mind the joy of serving the Risen Lord, the one who is with us in spirit every moment of the trials we experience this side of eternity.

Never forget that our God has placed us at this moment in history in a setting of family, neighbors and faith community in which we can and must seek to impact those around us with the love of Christ and the biblical values he taught us. With that in mind, know you are never alone.  The Lord is with you.

He is Risen!  He is Risen Indeed!
