 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • This week, the American Immigration Council testified before Congress regarding the many failures of Title 42, the border policy that created the greatest restriction on access to asylum in decades.

One of the most egregious consequences of Title 42 was that it led to the expulsion of over 13,000 children who arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border alone. Many were held in government custody for days or weeks and then expelled by plane back to their home country.

In the American Immigration Council’s testimony to Congress, we explain the impact Title 42 had on our asylum system and the hundreds of thousands of individuals who suffered under the policy.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“People who are given NTRs [Notice to Report] at a moment of what is crisis in their own lives are frankly set up for failure. If the government’s going to force you or me to go through a legal process with potentially serious legal consequences for us, the government needs to meet its burden and make sure we received the proper paperwork. If the government can’t do that for a specific reason the government needs to figure out a way to make that right." .”
