The student loan crisis is real. College gets more expensive every year, and it forces students to go into debt at a young age and forecloses so many options throughout their lives. More than 100,000 older Americans already have their Social Security benefits garnished to repay student loan debts.
Going to college wasn’t a mistake―shifting the cost of higher education from a public good to an individual burden was. It’s time to undo that mistake and cancel student debt!

At the beginning of the pandemic, the federal government paused the collection of student loans. It has now paused the resumption of payments TWICE after public pressure campaigns. But student loans won’t be any less burdensome in August than they are today.
Student loan debt harms us all. It stifles our economy and keeps people from starting families or businesses―two things that strengthen our Social Security system.
Social Security shows us the absolute power of simple, universal programs. We should demand no different from education. No matter where you come from, who you are, or how much money you have in your pocket, you should have a future with affordable education, and be able to build a life without crushing debt.
