When we broke the supermajority in 2018, that gave Roy the ability to BLOCK radical legislation Republicans have tried to enact.

Since then, Roy has vetoed bills that would restrict the right to abortion access, make it harder to protect our environment, and limit access to the ballot box. These measures are simply wrong for North Carolina, but thanks to Roy’s veto power, Republicans haven’t been able to implement them.

But now, with the GOP’s new ultra-partisan gerrymandering, they’ve set themselves up for a legislative supermajority again after November’s elections. If they gain that supermajority, they’ll be able to push through their anti-democratic, regressive agenda no matter what.

Right now, Republicans would need to pick up just two state Senate seats and 11 state House seats to gain supermajorities. Their redistricting efforts make their path much easier.

Experts agree that the GOP’s legislative maps would assure their party of an outsized share of political power — one that doesn’t reflect the political realities on the ground.

If they gain that power, we can count on Republican legislators to enact legislation targeting voting rights, reproductive rights, our environment, and more — after all, they’ve passed such laws before. And we can’t risk NC Republicans following the example of GOP lawmakers in other states that have targeted the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans. We cannot allow Republicans to reinstate their discriminatory “Bathroom Bill” or pass other anti LGBTQ+ legislation.
