Friend,
I have some good news! Last week, the House passed the MORE Act, which will repeal the federal prohibition of marijuana and expunge low-level federal marijuana offenses.
Additionally, it invests in cannabis small businesses in communities that have been harmed through the failed war on drugs. By making Small Business Administration loans and entrepreneurial development programs available to cannabis businesses, we can ensure small businesses are benefiting from decriminalization.
The criminalization of marijuana has torn communities apart and perpetuated a failed system of mass incarceration for decades -- and it’s a direct attack on communities of color. Through the deadly combination of over-policing and criminalization, BIPOC communities are more likely to be convicted of low-level marijuana offenses and receive longer sentences, which only reinforces cycles of harm.
Federal decriminalization of marijuana, along with expunging the record of low-level convictions, is the first step towards the true justice BIPOC communities deserve, but it’s not the end.
