We can't continue like this, John.
For the past month, everyday folks have been struggling to afford sky-high prices at the gas pump. In some parts of the country, a gallon of gas now costs more than $6, leading folks to pay $100 or even more to fill up their car. The truth is, there’s no other reason for this than so that Big Oil corporations can pad their profits.
Oil companies are already making huge amounts of money; they don't need to raise prices. But they know they can, and extract more and more from people just driving to get to work.
That’s why Cori introduced the Energy Security and Independence Act to spur domestic production of clean energy technologies with Rep. Jason Crow and Sen. Bernie Sanders earlier this week.
It's time to move beyond fossil fuels that pollute our air, overheat the planet, and are subject to corporate price manipulation from CEOs at Exxon and Chevron. True energy security means public investments in affordable, renewable, reliable energy for everyone. That's what Cori’s new bill is all about. It would allow President Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act to scale our transition to zero-emission industries and invest in programs to lower utility prices.
We know that passing the Energy Security and Independence Act is a needed step in our work to achieve energy security and move away from volatile fossil fuels. Can you make a $5 donation right now to show your support for Cori's bill and help us build the organizing power we need to keep Cori in Congress?
We must start taking real steps toward transitioning our country toward a green economy. That means making energy affordable for every household. Investing in energy efficiency so people can breathe clean air and keep the heat or air conditioning on. And alleviating the climate crisis by reducing our emissions.
And it's past time we are honest about the disproportionate harm Black and brown communities face as a result of our current reliance on fossil fuels. "Natural" gas has exposed 1 million Black Americans to cancer-causing carcinogens and has been responsible for thousands of days of school missed by Black children.
As the first person from the movement in defense of Black lives to serve in Congress, Cori is committed to leading this work to save Black lives. This new bill builds on Cori's previous legislation including the Green New Deal for Cities and People's Response Act to transform our country and create safer and healthier communities.
Thank you for your support,
Team Cori
