A Black woman will finally sit on the Supreme Court! Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday, will be the first Black woman as well as the first former public defender to serve on the nation’s highest court, and she will be one of the two women of color on the Court along with Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In the 232 year history of the Supreme Court, only five women have served, and three are on the Court today.

As a former public defender and federal judge, among other things, soon-to-be Justice Jackson is well-qualified to sit on the Court, and her presence there will help make the Court look more like America.

Arizona is unfortunately the latest in a long line of states enacting laws to make it harder to vote. Last week, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed legislation into law that requires all Arizonans to provide proof of citizenship and residency in order to register to vote. This law not only places an undue burden on the Latino communities in the state but could also keep tens of thousands of voters from casting a ballot.

One in five local election administrators say they are likely to leave their jobs before the 2024 presidential election. This is a result of the new emergence of harassment and even death threats that election officials are receiving from proponents of “The Big Lie”—the baseless claim that the 2020 election was stolen.

On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, we will join partners and activists from across the country in delivering flowers, thank you cards, and other forms of gratitude to thank these election heroes for doing their jobs and say that we stand with them and the essential work that they do so our democracy can function. Join one of the dozens of events that will take place across the country on Tuesday.
