John, this is huge.
Just hours ago, Michigan enacted a law that will eliminate some of the worst suffering for 10 million egg-laying hens while preserving protections for thousands of pigs and calves each year.
The new law not only eliminates cages for egg-laying hens raised in Michigan but requires that all eggs sold in Michigan no longer come from hens raised in cages, all by 2024.
This means that all Michigan farms—and all out-of-state farms that sell eggs to Michigan—must get rid of these horrible cages.
Mercy For Animals is proud to have been part of the powerful coalition that drove this legislation forward.
The generosity of supporters like you, John, enables Mercy For Animals to fight for animals like the hens in Michigan. This is the fifth U.S. state to pass legislation that not only bans battery cages for egg-laying hens but the sale of eggs from hens raised in them, regardless of which state produced the eggs.
