John,
Yesterday, history was made as Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first Black woman to be confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Just a few hours ago, I was proud and excited to be among one of the first to congratulate Judge Jackson in person at a White House reception in her honor. Now, I want to make sure she knows all of Chicago is behind her too!
It is long past time for this country to have a Justice who knows first-hand what it means to be a Black woman in this country. As a Black woman myself, I know how unique our lived experiences are. We deserve to have those experiences represented and reflected on our nation's highest court.
Along with her exceptional credentials and commitment to equitable justice, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation helps ensure our legal system reflects the nation it represents. As a Supreme Court Justice, Jackson will apply our constitution equally to all individuals in this country, lowering and removing unnecessary hurdles for marginalized people.
I am extremely hopeful for a brighter future under Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and look forward to all that she accomplishes in this role!
Thank you for your support,
— Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
