The Biden administration has announced that it will invoke the Defense Production Act for producing minerals needed for electric vehicle battery production.
Using a law first enacted under President Truman, the Biden administration will utilize the Defense Production Act to produce lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and manganese domestically, all while following strong environmental, labor, community, and tribal consultation standards.
This move will both reduce our dependence on the fossil fuel supplies of petro-dictators like Putin and bolster our own clean energy economy. It will also help us better globally compete with China’s current dominance in battery manufacturing.
The Defense Production Act is a crucial tool the president can use to steer U.S. manufacturing for important national strategic purposes. President Biden has previously invoked it to speed up the manufacturing of vaccines and personal protective equipment in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Invoking it this time shows President Biden recognizes the key national security importance of breaking away from foreign fossil fuel autocrats and addressing climate change simultaneously.
