John,
It's been a week since two students were murdered and three more were injured in a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California.
Gracie Anne Muehlberger was 15 years old and Dominic Blackwell was 14 years old. Gracie's parents affectionately called her "Sweetpea," and they said she was vivacious and funny. Dominic's loved ones remembered how he was always making people laugh and had a "cheesy" smile.
Both of them had just recently celebrated their birthdays. Both of them went to school last Thursday and never came home.
As a mom who wishes every single day that I could hug my beautiful butterfly Dylan just one more time, my heart aches for their families and the pain they're feeling right now. So today, I want to send them my deepest love, but also a promise for action – a promise that we are committed to protecting more children from gun violence. Will you take a moment to sign this card that we've put together for them? We're going to send it very soon.
Every time I get news of another school shooting, it rips my heart to pieces all over again. But we must continue to turn our anger and sadness into action. I'm so grateful to you for joining me in doing that today.
With love,
Nicole Hockley (Dylan's mom)
