John,
Every day, giant media corporations fight to expand online copyright and limit what we say and do online. Now they’ve upped the ante with the ironically named SMART Copyright Act,1 a garbage fire of a bill that would effectively mandate content filters on every website—severely limiting creators’ rights and free expression.2
If you think the DMCA is bad, this is way, way worse. We’re launching an emergency effort with EFF to collect signatures and make noise now through April 25. Can you sign on now and spread the word?
TAKE ACTION
This content filter bill sacrifices the free speech rights of artists, creators, and ordinary Internet users to hand control of the Internet to mega-corps like Disney, NewsCorp, and Amazon. Tell your lawmakers to reject this Hollywood power grab now.
This bill is an expansion of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), the landmark copyright law that has created outrageous difficulties for artists3 and helps bad actors silence speech they disagree with.4 It would expand DMCA across the Internet, requiring that every online service install automated filters that will be decided by the revolving door of ex-lobbyists at the U.S. Copyright Office. It’s a bogus measure with NO positives at all for artists or users.
This bill could become a major threat—fast. The staffer at Senator Tillis’ office who is behind it is determined to sneak this atrocious bill into must-pass legislation before the year is out. But if we make enough noise to alert other legislators, we can kill any hope of doing that. Sign on and spread the word. This is an all-out fight and we could use your support today and every day between now and April 25.
Thanks for keeping the Internet weird,
Lia at ❤️Fight
