Our Crisis at the Border
When the pandemic began taking its toll on the U.S. in the Spring of 2020, President Trump made the wise choice to restrict the flow of asylum-seeking immigrants at our southern border under a policy referred to as Title 42. Title 42 allows the government to keep people from migrating into the U.S. to help stop the spread of contagious disease within our borders. Those who crossed our border illegally could be deported immediately. It was the right move. Since March of 2020, U.S. immigration authorities have expelled more than 1.7 million people under Title 42.

Earlier this week, the White House announced that it would begin to roll back Title 42 restrictions at our southern border. President Biden is bowing to pressure from the progressive wing of his party to stop enforcing our borders. He is playing a political game and the American people are going to lose.

Mr. President, if you believe that it’s time to roll back Title 42 restrictions, do you believe the pandemic is over? If so, it’s time to bring ALL federal workers back into the office. It’s time to get rid of the mask mandates on airplanes. The pandemic can’t be raging in the rest of America, but over at the border. That just doesn’t make sense.

We clearly have a crisis at the border, and the Title 42 restrictions we had in place were helping to quell the flow of people coming in. It is not logical to remove COVID restrictions on people illegally crossing our border while keeping COVID restrictions in place for American citizens.

I cosponsored a Congressional Review Act to halt the expiration of Title 42 until the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration authorities could show the process they have in place for efficiently handling an unexpected surge of migrants. We’ve seen all too clearly that immigration authorities are completely overwhelmed and unable to handle the number of people attempting to cross our borders. There is no accountability. While that legislation failed, I will continue to hold the administration’s feet to the fire to keep our southern border secure. The people of Wyoming deserve answers.

Happy Trails,
WORKING IN WASHINGTON

Legislative Actions:

  • I cosponsored the Traveler’s Gun Rights Act that would allow folks who don’t have a permanent, fixed address, such as those living in RV communities, to list a P.O. Box or Private Mailbox for their address when filling out a Firearm Transaction Record with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).
    • It is important that all citizens, regardless of where they live, have equal ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
  • I joined the newly formed Senate Future Farmers of America (FFA) Caucus. This caucus will work to support agriculture educational efforts now and in the coming years.
    • The national FFA organization continues to be an organization of vital importance to the up-and-coming generation of farmers and ranchers. Thousands of people in Wyoming are alumni of the organization.
  • I cosponsored Senator Angus King’s (I-ME) Processing Revival and Intrastate Meat Exemption (PRIME) Act that would allow custom slaughter facilities to sell directly to consumers without the requirement that they be USDA certified and inspected.
    • It is important to the expansion of small businesses and the Wyoming's capacity to process meat that federal oversight be reduced so that small slaughter facilities have fewer burdens on their operations.

Committee Hearings:

  • Environment & Public Works (EPW) Committee
    • I questioned a panel on the Water Subcommittee hearing entitled, “Implementation of the Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act: Stakeholders’ Needs and Experiences.” Click here to watch the hearing.
  • Commerce Committee
    • I spoke in the Commerce hearing entitled “Ensuring Transparency in the Petroleum Markets” where I called for increases in American energy production. Click here to watch the hearing.

Major Votes:

  • Confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States
  • Opposed
    • I take my constitutional duty of fully vetting each of the president’s nominees very seriously. Based on Judge Brown’s previous record, I was not confident that she will fairly and impartially interpret the Constitution.
  • Passage of H.R. 7108, suspension of trade states with Russia
  • Supported
    • This bill suspends normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus. It also permanently authorizes the President to impose visa- and property-blocking sanctions based on violations of human rights, and it revises the President’s authority to impose these sanctions.
WORKING IN WYOMING

With the announcement that the State of Wyoming is drafting a plan to use federal funds to install electric vehicle charging stations across the state, my offices have received quite a few concerns. Folks are worried about electricity costs going up, lithium battery recycling, and the practicality of having electric cars on Wyoming roads. This is a situation that I will continue to monitor as the plan unfolds.

Media:

  • I joined Charles Payne on Fox’s “Making Money” to discuss Ukraine, inflation, and my Responsible Financial Innovation Act. Click here to watch the clip!
