Dear John,
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently announced that it will give individuals the option to select nonbinary “X” gender on the voluntary self-identification questions that are part of the intake process for filing discrimination charges.
Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) definition, “X” can mean two things. First, “X” can mean “unspecified,” offering privacy for those who do not wish to specify their gender identity. Second, “X” can mean “another gender identity,” for those who do not identify as either male or female.
The decision to recognize and institutionalize a more nuanced construction of gender outside of the “male” and “female” binary is an important step in promoting greater equity and inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community.
