As your Congresswoman, I am committed to advocating for children and families. During Sexual Assault Awareness month, I’m reflecting on how sexual assault and domestic violence overlap — and how we can support the women and children who survive it.
As a lawyer, I worked with victims of domestic violence for nearly 40 years. I saw firsthand how the Violence Against Women Act has been an important tool in combatting domestic violence.
Reauthorizing this bill is why I ran for office — to tangibly help children and families of Southeast PA. Read more about the Violence Against Women Act here.
There is still more work to be done, we must close the “boyfriend loophole” that currently allows convicted domestic abusers to keep firearms, despite clear evidence of the heightened risk to their victims. That’s why I’m running for re-election — I want to finish the work we started.
I will never stop fighting for children and families, and I will never stop fighting for survivors.
Sincerely,
Mary Gay
