War and Morality

Moral clarity is rarely found in war.  There is my side and your side, but almost never is it good guys and bad guys – at least other than we always want to cast our side as the good guys.  Wars are about power and territory and money.  That does not mean war should be avoided at all costs, it just means when viewed objectively and fully it is hard to put a good guy/bad guy narrative on war.

Even WWII was not morally clear at the time.  It was only after we beat Germany and found the horror of the camps that we knew with certainty that right was on our side.  Nonetheless, we have come to view WWII as the last good war because in retrospect it was a moral certainty that Germany was in the wrong.
