Ketanji Brown-Jackson Confirmed to the Supreme Court With Help From Three Republicans

Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Mitt Romney (UT). From the story: The United States Senate on Thursday voted to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the 116th Justice of the United States Supreme Court. All Democrats in the Senate voted to confirm Biden’s SCOTUS nominee, joined by three Republicans: Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Mitt Romney of Utah. Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the 53-47 roll call vote as senators called out votes from their desks on the Senate floor (Townhall). From Daily Wire: Jackson has also been attacked for her past support of Critical Race Theory (CRT) thinkers and the inclusion of the controversial theory in her legal philosophy. The judge also serves on the board of a Washington, D.C., school that promotes CRT in its curriculum. In a number of past speeches and lectures, Jackson has promoted CRT and legitimized affiliated terms such as “microaggression” (Daily Wire). SCOTUSblog: She will be the first Black woman and first former public defender to serve as a justice. Jackson will be sworn in when Stephen Breyer retires this summer (Twitter).

Russia Suspended From U.N. Human Rights Council

From the story: The U.N. General Assembly voted Thursday to suspend Russia from the world organization’s leading human rights body over allegations of horrific rights violations by Russian soldiers in Ukraine, which the United States and Ukraine have called tantamount to war crimes. It was a rare, if not unprecedented rebuke against one of the five veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council (Associated Press). From Daily Mail: More than 90 countries voted to kick Moscow off the council after an American-led drive, while 24, including the despotic regimes of China, Syria, Belarus and Zimbabwe – all Russia’s closest allies – voted against the measure. Nearly 60 countries including India, which continues to buy weapons from Russia, abstained (Daily Mail). Nikki Haley: Today’s UN vote kicking Russia off the UN Human Rights Council is the right thing to do. When you give war criminals a seat at the table, the council loses all credibility. Now do Venezuela, Cuba, and China (Twitter).

Twitter Employees Fearful of Elon musk; Musk Has Provided “A Wake-up Call”

From the story: Within hours of the surprise disclosure this week that Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” acquired enough shares to become the top Twitter shareholder, political conservatives began flooding social media with calls for the return of Donald Trump. With Musk on the board, the employees said his views on moderation could weaken years-long efforts to make Twitter a place of healthy discourse, and might allow trolling and mob attacks to flourish (Reuters). Dennis Prager: Well, it’s not a news organization. It’s fake social medium. It’s fake. It’s anti-free speech. The most important freedom that humans can have. You lose all dignity when you cannot say what you think….Twitter is a despicable organization run by despicable cowards. And Elon Musk is doing something about it (Daybreak Daily). Hugh Hewitt: Musk is at Twitter’s door with a wake-up call. Now, who will do the same for the rest of the country’s purveyors of news and opinion? (WPost).

California SB 960 Will Allow Illegals to Become Law Enforcement Officers

From the story: SB 960, proposed by Democrat Sen. Nancy Skinner, would remove the provision that an individual must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States in order to become a police officer. The bill makes no distinction between legal and illegal immigrants (Fox News). The bill reads: Existing law, with certain exceptions, prohibits a person who is not a citizen of the United States from being appointed as a member of the California Highway Patrol. This bill would remove that prohibition, and would make conforming changes (CA.Gov). Victor Davis Hanson has been writing about the death of the citizen. From 2019: the concept of citizenship is being assaulted on the premodern side by the legal blending of mere residency with citizenship (National Review).

Growing Numbers of Americans Worried “A Great Deal” About Crime

From the story: Americans’ concern about crime and violence in the U.S. has edged up in the past year, and for the first time since 2016, a majority (53%) say they personally worry a “great deal” about crime. Another 27% report they worry a “fair amount,” which places the issue near the top of the list of 14 national concerns — behind only inflation and the economy (Gallup). From Daily Mail: The liberal Pacific Northwest bastion topped off February with 22 murders so far this year – up from the 19 in 2021 – and is on track to hit around 130 by December, according to the Oregonian. The city, which slashed its police budget in the wake of protests over George Floyd ‘s murder, set a record last year with 92 homicides – the highest since there were 70 homicides in 1987 (Daily Mail).

By 2023, Canada to Provide Medically Assisted Suicide for Those With "Irremediable" Mental Illness

From the story: From March 2023, people suffering with disorders including depression, bipolar disorder and PTSD will be able to seek doctor-assisted deaths if they are suffering from unbearable psychological pain. The majority of people seeking MAID are cancer sufferers, and the move to expand the service has caused deep divides among mental health professionals (Unilad). From National Post: How do you define “grievous and irremediable” in psychiatry? Is it possible to conclude, with any certainty or confidence, that a mental illness has no prospect of ever improving? What has been done, what has been tried, and is it enough (National Post)?

Bipartisan Group of Senators Seek to Keep Title 42 to Deal With Border Crisis

CBS Reports: A group of Democratic senators on Thursday joined Republican lawmakers in introducing a measure that would temporarily block the Biden administration’s plan to end pandemic-related restrictions that allow border authorities to quickly expel migrants (CBS News). From New York Post: Federal officials estimate that as many as 170,000 migrants will head to the border once the Title 42 policy ends. The number of illegal immigrants encountered at the southern border shot up 6.6% in February from January, Customs and Border Protection said (New York Post).

President Biden Extending the Student Loan Repayment Pause

President Biden: Today, my Administration is extending the pause on federal student loan repayments through August 31st, 2022 (Twitter). From Market Watch: The extension has allowed millions of American borrowers to postpone payments during the pandemic — student loan payments were originally set to resume May 1 (Market Watch). Hugh Hewitt: Everyone should be willing to tell everybody: No, you borrowed the money. You pay the money back. And if you have to go bankrupt, you have to go bankrupt and you start over again. It takes seven years. We understand that. It’s not — you’re not going to jail if you default on your loan. But not letting — ugh, I just — the lessons Joe Biden is teaching people are remarkable (Daybreak Daily).

U.S. Consumer Debt Rises by $42 Billion in February; Over 11 Percent Annually

CNN: Americans got into a lot more debt in February as rampant inflation kept up the pressure, the Federal Reserve’s consumer credit report showed Thursday. Debt levels jumped by nearly $42 billion to a total of almost $4.5 trillion. That’s an annual increase of 11.3%, seasonally adjusted, far outperforming economists’ expectations and setting a new high. In January, total credit had grown only 2.4%. Americans have been challenged with a rapid pace of price increases everywhere, from the grocery store to the gas station. Year-over-year inflation has increased at a pace not seen in 40 years. Consumer spending has kept up the pace so far, but it is not immediately clear whether that’s because people are paying more for the same items that got more expensive or are actually buying more goods and services (CNN Business).

Hugh Hewitt has a simple math (and morality) lesson: Borrow money, pay it back
