Dear John,
It has been a rocky few weeks in El Salvador. Things went from bad to worse as President Nayib Bukele responded to a spike in murders of historical proportions by limiting basic human rights. Anybody who dared to question him, including WOLA, and many of our partners, became targets of a relentless smear campaign. Since then, Bukele has further cracked down on basic rights, including mass detentions, limits on due process, and banning public discussions about the country’s violent gangs.
Here’s an opinion piece I wrote with Katya Salazar Luzula, the executive director of the Due Process of Law Foundation, about what Bukele should focus on, instead of harassing us and our partners on social media. |
These are the kind of abuses of power we fight to tackle every day. We cannot do it alone.
Your support allows us to respond to emerging human rights crises and support our partners on the frontlines of threats to democracy in Latin America. All of us at WOLA are grateful for the ways that you have stood shoulder to shoulder with us over the years and I hope that you will continue to do so in the struggles to come. Sincerely, |
Carolina Jiménez Sandoval President, WOLA
