# [#]Aloha friend, and happy World Health Day !

As a doctor, I’ve spent my life caring for Hawaii families. I still go back to Big Island on weekends to take care of patients in the emergency room at Kohala hospital.

Serving as Lt. Governor reminds me every day that there’s no more important responsibility I have than protecting the health and safety of the people that count on me.

Over the last three years, I’ve been honored and incredibly proud to work alongside many of Hawaii’s healthcare heroes.

When a measles epidemic hit Samoa in late 2018, Hawaii sent an emergency team of doctors and nurses to help, and within 48 hours we vaccinated 37,000 people and protected Samoa’s children.

Just a few months later, COVID hit Hawaii, and we pulled together to vaccinate over a million people, protect our kupuna, and save thousands of lives. Our state made it through the pandemic with the lowest infection rate in the country.

We’ve already accomplished some great things for Hawaii’s health and safety, but together we can do even more in the coming years. I’m ready to take on our state’s health challenges by: Ensuring affordable, accessible, quality care for all of Hawaii’s residents; Addressing health disparities across our state including access to care, life expectancy, maternal mortality, and chronic disease; and, Providing more resources and greater access to care for addiction, mental health, and the homeless community. But when it comes to our health and safety, there is always more work to be done. That’s why I want to hear from you: what healthcare issues are most important to you?
