Oklahoma Democratic Party Statement on Historic Confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court
OKLAHOMA CITY—APRIL 7, 2022 – Today, the Oklahoma Democratic Party issued the following statement after judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by a bipartisan U.S. Senate vote to the Supreme Court.
“Judge Jackson, the daughter of public school teachers, has served as an accomplished lawyer and public defender, a distinguished federal judge, and now, will be a historic member of the Supreme Court,” commented Alicia Andrews, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair. Read more...
War on Women’s Health Rights Continues with Unconstitutional Bill Passing
OKLAHOMA CITY—APRIL 6, 2022 – If anyone believes Senate Bill 612, the bill penalizing doctors for performing abortions in Oklahoma, doesn’t affect them, they are incredibly misguided and misinformed. So long as lawmakers try to control anyone’s body using performative legislation that limits access to healthcare, society is in danger of losing all rights. SB612 is a precursor to more legislative interference in women’s healthcare that should remain between individuals, families, and healthcare providers.
“Legislators are pretending to care about protecting women and the unborn with SB612, but they fail to see the bigger picture,” stated Alicia Andrews, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair. “The answer is not penalizing doctors or limiting access to safe and legal procedures. It’s making sure that mothers can afford to raise a child, and it’s about making sure the child will be safe at home from violence. Can the mother afford healthcare during pregnancy and for the child once born? These are just some of the issues women consider when deciding whether or not to carry the pregnancy to term. These are the issues lawmakers should be focused on if they want to reduce abortions. Read more...
Oklahoma Republican Delegation Votes Against Lowering Insulin Costs
OKLAHOMA CITY—APRIL 1, 2022 – Nearly 450,000 people in Oklahoma suffer from diabetes, making Oklahoma the fourth-highest age-adjusted diabetes death rate in the nation. Many who depend on insulin, which can cost as much as $1,000 per month, are forced to make life and death decisions when they cannot afford this costly prescription.
The Oklahoma Democratic Party released the following statement after Oklahoma’s Republican Delegation in Congress voted against a bill to cap the cost of insulin for many Americans at $35 per month a year after our own state’s legislature succeeded in a bipartisan effort to cap the copay cost of insulin for Oklahomans with diabetes.
“Cole, Lucas, Hern, Bice, and Mullin are completely disconnected from Oklahoma and what is going on in our state,” commented Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Alicia Andrews. “Our delegation likes to shoot for headlines and sound bites claiming ‘Oklahoma values,’ but they fail to uphold those values and protect the people who voted them in to do their job. They have forgotten about Oklahomans, and when they had an opportunity to be bipartisan on an issue that would further help Oklahomans and all Americans who depend on insulin, they failed. Stitt Fails to Take the High Road in Signing Transgender Women Sports Bill
OKLAHOMA CITY—MARCH 30, 2022 – Stitt missed an opportunity to be more inclusive and compassionate on the issues transgender women face. The signing of SB2 deemed the “Save Women’s Sports Act” fails to protect anyone. Instead, anti-LGBTQ+ bills like SB2 trigger a mental health crisis that negatively impacts transgender people considering suicide. This law is discriminatory and will most likely be challenged in the courts, continuing Stitt’s appetite for wasting taxpayers’ money.
“Stitt hungers for only one thing — the spotlight. He believes that signing this bill into law makes him out to be a hero to his misinformed and misguided base,” stated Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “The LGBTQ+ community is being used once again as political pawns for political points. What a better time for Stitt to sign this hateful bill than during an election year where he thinks he’s making up for not protecting Oklahomans after three years of failed leadership. He only thinks of himself when governing, not the destructive nature of his dangerous actions,” said Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. Read more...
Lieutenant Governor Squanders $13.6 Million on Burgers and Steaks
OKLAHOMA CITY—MARCH 23, 2022 – That’s a lot of beef and BBQ sauce down the drain on taxpayers’ dime. In 2020, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, under Lieutenant Governor Pinnell’s direction, contracted with Swadley’s Foggy Bottom Kitchen to “save” a run-down dying state park restaurant industry at a failing cost of $13.6 million. Pinnell was aware in advance that this endeavor was a risky investment knowing few companies would want to take over the state park restaurant project. Oklahoma taxpayers footed the initial costs for renovations and $1 million in operating losses.
“When four out of five companies bow out of bidding on a contract, that should be a red flag that an already bleeding project is a dead-end waste of taxpayers’ dollars. If Pinnell and the Tourism Department knew that only one company was interested in bidding after the others learned of the problematic venture, why wasn’t the project scrapped or bids extended? Jumping on the one single bid without more input and proper investigation of expenses before giving to the single bidder has squandered $13.6 million with nothing to show for it,” commented Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party.
