Ketanji Brown Jackson has been confirmed to replace Justice Breyer on the Supreme Court.
Judge, now Justice, Jackson is impeccably qualified to serve on the high court, and it’s especially fitting that one of her first legal jobs was serving as one of Justice Breyer’s law clerks.
And yet there’s something that bothers me about this confirmation process.
What bothers me is the emphasis on Justice Jackson’s race and gender.
I’m happy to see a Black woman confirmed to our nation’s highest court. It should have happened years ago.
But focusing on the fact that Justice Jackson is Black and a woman misses the point entirely. She has been confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice because she is eminently qualified to fulfill that role.
I’m tired of hearing that Justice Jackson was nominated because she is a Black woman. But more importantly, she has every qualification to become a Justice that her now-colleagues have.
I know that many of you, like me, have been judged by things that have nothing to do with whether we’re qualified for our jobs.
She’s a woman. She stripped to pay bills in college. She’s too pretty to be smart.
I’ve heard them all.
But no more.
I think Justice Jackson’s confirmation is a victory for all of us. She put in the work to get this job, and her work ethic can’t be dismissed by saying she’s Black and a woman. If anything, that means she had to work even harder to get this job.
I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Justice Jackson’s historic confirmation.
I’m proud to see the first Black woman confirmed to the Supreme Court, but I’m just as proud to see a smart, hard-working, capable, responsible, diligent, and talented person serve on our highest court.
Let's build an America where every position is filled by people as qualified as Justice Jackson. Can I count on you to chip in today to make this dream a reality?
