Our Voice for Children November 2019 Advocating for All Children Our state and national policy teams continue to defend against threats to children's health and safety nationwide. Here are some of the ways we've been standing up for children this month: We strongly condemned a proposed rule that would allow agencies to discriminate against safe, loving adoptive parents on the basis of sex, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation. CDF-Ohio met with our partners in the Ohio Children's Caucus to discuss affordable housing and a primary prevention approach to eliminating childhood lead poisoning. We stood with our civil rights partners to demand that the Department of Education institute a gainful employment rule and better protect students of color. We denounced the admission by the Trump administration that it had separated 1,556 more immigrant parents and children—including more than 200 under the age of five—than previously disclosed. We highlighted how the proven model of CDF Freedom Schools® can help students struggling with reading performance as we examined the latest Nation's Report Card. "This Is What Democracy Looks Like" Last week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in three consolidated cases challenging the Trump administration's unlawful termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and we were in the crowd outside the court alongside Dreamers, advocates, and allies. Ending this program would tear children away from their parents, flying in the face of everything we know about the need for children to grow up in safe and healthy families—a truth that a bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives called upon just a week earlier when they introduced the Family First Transition Act. We hope that the Supreme Court will consider the needs of the more than 250,000 children who have at least one parent who is a DACA recipient when they weigh the arguments they heard. Ways to Change the Odds for Children This Holiday Season Any gift that you can make this holiday season will help us improve the odds for all children. Did you know there are multiple ways to support the Children’s Defense Fund? An Anniversary We Didn't Want to Celebrate Yesterday we hit a landmark—one that we never wanted to reach. The Democratic debate in Atlanta was the 150th debate without a question about how the candidates would address child poverty. We think this is an outrage and that the nearly 12 million children living in poverty deserve answers to a question that has not been asked for 20 years. We will continue to elevate this need, and you can help us by joining the 36,000 supporters who have added their name to the petition. Save the Date! Tuesday, December 3, is Giving Tuesday, a day of global generosity and a chance for people to support their favorite organizations making change in their communities.
