Friend,
Just now, the U.S. Senate confirmed Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States in a bipartisan vote.
Justice Jackson is the first Black woman ever to be confirmed to the Supreme Court and as a former federal public defender, brings with her a track record committed to equal justice and civil rights.
Prior to Justice Jackson’s historic confirmation, she served on the federal bench for over nine years—first the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and then the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, largely seen as the second most powerful court in the country.
During her confirmation hearings, we saw Republican senators spread misinformation about now-Justice Jackson with questions steeped in racism, sexism, transphobia, and more. Justice Jackson demonstrated grace, brilliance, and patience throughout these hearings and showed us exactly why she is eminently qualified to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Out of 116 people who’ve been confirmed as Supreme Court justices, 112 were white, and 110 were men. But the Supreme Court routinely rules on cases that disproportionately impact Black women—such as voting rights, abortion access, prisons and policing, housing, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Justice Jackson’s very presence on the Supreme Court ensures more equal representation in our country’s highest court and allows Black girls and women to be able to see themselves as legal leaders.
