We’ve confirmed the first Black woman and the first public defender to the highest court in the country Indivisibles,
It’s finally happened: Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has been confirmed as the newest justice on the Supreme Court by a bipartisan 53-47 vote in the Senate.
Over the past few weeks, we watched as Republican members of the Judiciary Committee thoroughly disrespected Judge Jackson during her hearings in a blatantly partisan attempt to smear her name in spite of her stellar record. They did not succeed. She made it through the hearings unscathed with her head held high and the adoration of the people. And now we have confirmed the first Black woman and the first public defender to the highest court in the country.
Today, we’re taking time to celebrate soon-to-be Justice Jackson, the historic nature of her confirmation, and the much-needed perspective and expertise she’ll bring to the Court. And we also know that the fight doesn’t end here. The Supreme Court is still dominated by hyper-conservatives bent on destroying abortion access, environmental protections, immigrant rights, and more. We cannot put one Black woman in the position of having to save the courts from themselves.
That’s why we’re still calling to expand the Supreme Court and institute serious reforms to reclaim the Court’s legitimacy. Today we’ve gained an incredible new justice who we know will approach her position with smarts, determination, and compassion. Now, we must give her room to succeed by adding seats to the Supreme Court and reversing the far-right takeover of our judiciary.
Click here to celebrate Justice Jackson’s confirmation by calling your senators and demanding they send her four new colleagues. This is what it’ll take to save the courts and stop their ongoing attacks on democracy and our constitutional rights.
Take some time today to celebrate this win -- it’s more important than ever in these times when the wins can feel few and far between. However you choose to mark this moment, we hope it’ll give you the energy you need to keep pushing for more and better, tomorrow and every day.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
