It’s official, John!
Today is a profoundly important day in our country’s history:
the Senate just confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson as the next Supreme Court justice and the first Black woman to sit on the highest Court in the land.
The Supreme Court has existed for 232 years, it's had 115 justices, and not one of them has been a Black woman — until now.
Justice Jackson’s record of protecting the rights of everyone, no matter their race or background, will help the Supreme Court live up to its responsibility to the American people. There is no doubt in my mind that Justice Jackson will be a brilliant addition to the bench, bringing her breadth of experience and invaluable perspective to the critical decisions ahead.
We need a Supreme Court that truly reflects the country it serves — and Justice Jackson’s confirmation is a historic, long-overdue step in that direction. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” and today is a reminder to keep moving forward because we can and will win these righteous fights.
Today let’s celebrate this historic moment, and tomorrow we’ll get right back to working to ensure that Justice Jackson gets four new coworkers who are just as amazing as she is.
Thanks,
