Friend, today the Senate made history by confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.
Like so many of you, I am grateful to and inspired by the generations of Black women who worked to make the dreams of our ancestors a reality.
When I first saw this photo of Justice Brown Jackson’s daughter during a Senate confirmation hearing, I couldn’t help but think of my own daughters. I am thankful that they will grow up in a world where they can dream of becoming a Supreme Court Justice, Vice President, the President of the United States – anything they put their mind to.
This is a day to celebrate, but I would be remiss to ignore the baseless accusations and reckless questioning Justice Brown Jackson endured during her confirmation hearings. Republicans tried their hardest to block President Biden’s nomination of an incredibly well–qualified Black woman to the Supreme Court, and it’s the same brand of nonsense that is endorsed by our Republican opponents like Dan Cox. That’s why it is crucial that we elect my husband, John King, to be our state’s next Democratic governor.
John would make history, too. If elected, he would be the nation’s FIRST Afro-Latino governor and Maryland’s first Black governor. He is committed to lifting up Black women in our economy, from prioritizing universal early education to passing Paid Family Leave to appointing more female judges of color. And, as Governor, John will continue the work he started as Secretary of Education and ensure that every child of every color and every zip code has the resources and opportunities to dream big.
We can’t risk electing a Trump-endorsed Republican to the governor’s mansion – we need a Governor who will build on the progress we see in Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's confirmation today. Friend, will you celebrate Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson's historic confirmation with me by supporting our historic movement here in Maryland?
