Dear People For Supporter, History was made today in the Senate as Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court by a vote of 53-47. This is a joyous and wonderful moment for us as a country – and on behalf of everyone here at People For the American Way, I wanted to say THANK YOU for helping make this happen. Your voices, your activism, and your financial support played a major role in advancing this nomination through today’s vote and into the history books.
Words can only partially express the soul-deep joy we feel in this moment. The confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who will be the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, caps so many years of striving and struggle by Black women persevering in the fight for an equal voice in our society. The future Justice Jackson is a person of matchless credentials and a demonstrated commitment to civil rights and the Constitution, who is poised to shatter one of our country’s oldest glass ceilings. Speaking personally, as the grandson of a Black woman who fought for civil rights throughout the twentieth century and the father of a Black daughter who sees a new day dawning for her generation, I could not be more proud. So now, we celebrate! We're happy to invite you to a special livestream event tomorrow at 4 PM to celebrate Justice Jackson’s confirmation. (If you’re in the DC area, please join us outside the Supreme Court in person!) Moving forward, however, we have to hold the Far Right accountable. Far-right senators’ disrespect of this eminently-qualified nominee – and their abuse of her hearing process – were appalling. They tried to make a mockery of a moment that was deeply important and inspirational to countless millions of Americans – from the thoroughly debunked lie that Judge Jackson was lenient in her sentencing of pedophiles, pushed hardest by Sen. Josh Hawley ... to Sen. Ted Cruz ridiculously waving around children’s books and challenging Judge Jackson on whether babies are racist ... to Sen. Marsha Blackburn trying to get Judge Jackson to deny the basic existence and humanity of trans people. As you know, the baseless and bigoted smears against Judge Jackson were never really about evaluating her qualifications. They were red meat for the extreme far-right base, aimed at whipping them into a frenzy in an election year. And like clockwork, those smears have been picked up and amplified by far-right media and Radical Right movement organizations, and, in turn, repeated again and again by senators and other elected officials who know damn well that they are nothing but lies. It’s a feedback loop we’ve become all too familiar with, and are constantly working to expose and disrupt with our Right Wing Watch research. Through far-right senators’ treatment of Judge Jackson and their grandstanding during the hearing, we also caught a preview of the kind of agenda they’ll push if they seize control of Congress, turning back the clock decades – and in some cases a century – on Americans’ fundamental rights. We’ll be fighting them every step of the way, and we’re SO glad to have you in this fight with us. So thanks again – and happy Ketanji Brown Jackson day! All the best, Ben Jealous, President P.S. It’s important that senators hear from their constituents in the wake of this historic vote. Those who did the right thing and voted to confirm Judge Jackson – regardless of whether they are usually on our side or not – should be acknowledged for doing the right thing and thanked. Those who opposed her confirmation – and grasped at straws to justify an opposition that couldn’t be reasonably justified – need to hear their constituents’ disappointment, and should be shamed. Thanks again!
